Contact lens industry report Q3 2012

Aside

According to a recent report from Cleveland research, the contact lens industry demand increased May-June 2012. Coopervision revenue in Europe/Middle east/Africa was about 30%, however, the Avaira Toric comeback in the market has not been very successful (possibly related to the earlier recall).

Ciba Vision‘s daily disposable silicone hydrogel lens Dailies Total 1 performs very well, also from a clinical perspective. Dailies Total 1 is available in Europe since November 2011, not yet in the UK but is expected to launch in the US 2013.

Furthermore, Bausch & Lomb received FDA approval of their Biotrue™ OneDay contact lenses in the US. The lens is already launched in Italy, and will later this year be available in the UK and Nordic markets.

Lubricity

The lubricious lensCiba Vision launch their single use, daily replacement silicone hydrogel lens: Total 1 in 2012. This isn’t exactly a first as Johnson & Johnson already make a daily replacement silicone hydrogel (or SiHy as Ciba are calling it) lens called 1 Day Acuvue TruEye. However, Total1 will be the first such lens to feature an increase in water content from 33% to over 80% from the core of the lens to its surface.

Ciba Vision report that as many as 44% of contact lens wearers experience discomfort and that, at 48%, is the primary reason people stop wearing contact lenses. What Total1 brings to the table is lubricity, a buzz-word we suspect we will be hearing a lot of in 2012.

Lubricious means to have a smooth or slippery quality. With Total1′s unique lens material, dual water content and high DK value (which measures the amount of oxygen getting through to the eye) Ciba Vision are hoping to bring former contact lens wearers back to the fold and to encourage new wearers to try lenses due to the improvement in comfort.

Total1 is already on sale in Nordic countries and will be available to the rest of the world in 2012. Ciba Vision prepared a press release for Total1. You can read the pdf here.
